Collect

Lord, you have taught us
that all our doings without love are nothing worth:
send your Holy Spirit
and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of love,
the true bond of peace and of all virtues,
without which whoever lives is counted dead before you.
Grant this for your only Son Jesus Christ’s sake,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Trinity 1

The church enters what is called ‘Ordinary Time’. From November until last Sunday, the pace of changing seasons has been rapid.  This more pastoral phase lasts from now until the beginning of Advent and allows us to consider aspects of belief at greater leisure. This Sunday faith itself is considered

Collect

O God,
the strength of all those who put their trust in you,
mercifully accept our prayers
and, because through the weakness of our mortal nature
we can do no good thing without you,
grant us the help of your grace,
that in the keeping of your commandments
we may please you both in will and deed;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

In the New Testament, Pentecost was the occasion of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ, as described in the Acts of the Apostles 2:1–31. and therefore in the Christian liturgical year, it became a feast commemorating this occasion. For this reason, Pentecost is described by some Christians as the “Birthday of the Church The Pentecostal movement of Christianity derives its name from this New Testament event, as the movement emphasizes direct personal experience with God, akin to the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles.

Collect

Holy Spirit, sent by the Father,
ignite in us your holy fire;
strengthen your children with the gift of faith,

Sunday 22nd May 2016  Trinity Sunday

Pope Gregory IX instituted Trinity Sunday in 828 AD. This day is known for being the only major Christian festival that celebrates a church doctrine rather than an event in its sacred history. It is dedicated to the Christian belief in the Trinity – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The belief of one God in three elements is a distinctive of the Christian faith but the early church was plagued by contrary views. Trinity Sunday spread throughout the western church around the 14th century

Collect

 Holy God,
faithful and unchanging:
enlarge our minds with the knowledge of your truth,
and draw us more deeply into the mystery of your love,
that we may truly worship you,
Father, Son and Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

 Scottish Church Census

The Linkage has been asked to take part on the Scottish Church Census. Every one of the 4,000 local churches in Scotland will be invited to take part in the most comprehensive survey ever undertaken of churchgoing in this country.  As well as a form for the Church to complete, each member of the congregation attending a service on Sunday 8th May will be asked to fill in a very short slip.  We shall be very grateful if you could undertake this and hand your slip before leaving the Church.  Equally we shall understand should you wish to decline to take part.
