St Mary’s Third Sunday at Three Concert Series

Christopher Roads writes
“This concert was a gem. It was not so much a display of virtuosity –
although there was that – as an exposition on organ construction, and
the relationship between Buxtehude and Bach, and Widor and Vierne, and
their individual contributions to the evolution of organ music. To those who braved the snow, a really enjoyable experience.” The flautist, Lee Holland, will be coming to the next concert to be held on the 18th February with the guitarist Sasha Savaloni’
Inclement weather

A reminder that, should in the future, there be doubt of a service being held, please phone the Rectory (01877 382887) or Richard’s mobile as above to check the situation before starting out.

Heating at St Mary’s

It is intended that a new heating system will be installed in St.
Mary’s over the summer, grants permitting . Details of this are described on a storyboard placed at the back of the church near the font for those interested in knowing more about it. Many thanks to Christopher and Nick who have spent a great deal of time and effort pursuing the project

Nicky Aitken RIP

Some members of Aberfoyle congregation will have known the late Peggy Aitken of Mullanhead, Parkhall Balfron. The Rector has recently been advised that Nicky Aitken (Peggie’s step-son) died last June in New Zealand after a long illness. May he rest in peace.

Clergy Conference.

Richard is absent at the above between Monday 22nd and Wednesday 24th January. Urgent matters can of course reach him by text. There is no midweek at Callander on Wednesday 24th.

Inclement weather

An email was sent out early Sunday morning cancelling the services because of expected snowfall. Not everyone however was aware of the message and so this is obviously not the best method of urgent communication. Should in the future there be doubt of a service being held, it is probably best to phone the Rectory 01877 382887 to check before starting out.  Hopefully this is the first and last Sunday of the winter that this will happen!

Good wishes for the New Year to everyone.

Diocesan Episcopal Election

It has been announced that the Preparatory Committee having met shortly before Christmas failed to achieve a shortlist of candidates for consideration. It is presumed that the wish of the Diocese will be for the process to be repeated in the New Year in the hope that a fresh shortlist can be achieved.  The Electoral Synod meets next on Saturday 27th January when any developments will be discussed.

Mary Bates

Mary suffered a fall in November and after a stay in hospital, is now recuperating at home. It is nice to know that Mary has retained her sense of humour and her poem recounting the trials of the past days is reproduced at the end of this bulletin. We send Mary our love and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Mary’s 12 Days of Christmas* (courtesy of Forth Valley Health Board)

* substitute November !

On the First Day of Christmas Forth Valley gave to  me –

A Sooper Dooper ORIF

(it was actually November 2nd but what’s a day between friends. ORIF = Open Reduction Internal Fixation see 6 & 7)

On the Second Day of Christmas Forth Valley gave to me –

2 paramedics

(who blue-lighted me to Forth Valley Royal after I stepped into thin air – actually 31st October but see above !)

On the Third Day of Christmas Forth Valley gave to  me –

3 Koi Carp

(ye-es.  I was put on dihydrocodeine after the op and as an opiate based painkiller, it can have a mildly hallucinatory effect in some people.  I was totally convinced I was in a fish tank, not a ward, with three koi carp swimming around.  The carp were rounded up by the ward staff next morning, and returned to their owner, one of the porters so I was told, but inexplicably made a return visit the following night.  “Recaptured” and returned again the next morning, my medication was also changed !!)

On the Fourth Day of Christmas Forth Valley gave to  me –

4 physios

(much more useful than the calling birds, this team of “birds” had me up on my feet only 3 days after the op)

On the Fifth Day of Christmas Forth Valley gave to  me –

5 household aids

(including a trolley, perching stool, not to mention  the elbow crutches – and very useful they are too !)

On the Sixth Day of Christmas Forth Valley gave to  me –

6 sturdy plates

(see 1 above. They HAD to be sturdy ! I’ll be a NIGHTMARE next time at airport security – when I’m allowed to travel !)

On the Seventh Day of Christmas Forth Valley gave to  me –

28 screws

(OK as there isn’t a 28th day I had to cheat and use a multiple here.  I enquired as to whether the screws were self-tappers in best sailing fashion, although the surgeons weren’t certain, I was assured they weren’t a job lot from Screwfix Direct)

On the Eighth Day of Christmas Forth Valley gave to  me –

8 bowls of soup

(there WERE 8 different flavours of soup, all excellent.  The food was actually pretty good !)

On the Ninth Day of Christmas Forth Valley gave to  me –

9 nurses nursing

(total in my ward of 9 nurses, 2 shifts, 6 day & 3 night, day shift “long” (12.5hrs, or “short” (6hrs) to cover 18 patients. On one memorable day there were only 2 nurses on duty for part of the day for various reasons.  With one notable exception they were brilliant, and encouraged us all to get up and doing, while recognising when a bit of help was needed)

On the Tenth Day of Christmas Forth Valley gave to  me –

10 jugs of water

(If it wasn’t water it was tea – plenty of it – drinking lots was actively encouraged although strangely “tipples” of stronger stuff smuggled in to the ward by one patient’s visitors were not !)

On the Eleventh Day of Christmas Forth Valley gave to  me –

33 stitches

(yes, another numerical “cheat” ! Op scar is very impressive – it had to be big to get all these plates in !!)

On the Twelfth Day of Christmas Forth Valley gave to me –

12 Mepore dressings

(very useful for keeping the scar nice and clean)
