Notices for week beginning 23rd January 2017
Headlines
The next meeting of Dunblane Area Council will be at 19.30 on Tuesday 24th January when Bishop David will be reflecting on events that have filled his diary recently. This will include discussion of the repercussions of the Epiphany service, held in Glasgow Cathedral earlier this month, that subsequently made headline news. It should be an interesting meeting and will be held at Holy Trinity Albert Place Stirling FK8 2QL. All are welcome.
The Revd Canon Kenyon Wright CBE
Kenyon Wright died on the 11th January at the age of 84. Within the Linkage many will remember Kenyon as a regular worshipper at St Andrews before retiring to England. Kenyon was a self-effacing man and few were ever aware of his distinguished career both within and outside the Church
He was born in Paisley in 1932, the son of a textile technician, and attended Paisley Grammar School, followed by Glasgow and Cambridge Universities.
From 1955, he served as a Methodist missionary in India and in 1963 was appointed Director of the Ecumenical, Social and Industrial Institute in Durgapur, India.
In 1970, he returned to the United Kingdom as Director of Urban Ministry, at Coventry Cathedral and then in 1974 was promoted to Canon Residentiary at the Cathedral and Director of its International Ministry.
In 1981, he came back to Scotland and became General Secretary of the Scottish Council of Churches. In 1990, he became Director of Kairos (Centre for a Sustainable Society). He was a long-time campaigner for Scottish devolution. On 30 March 1989, he became executive chairman of the cross-party Scottish Constitutional Convention (1989-1999). The convention was aimed at drawing up a blueprint for Scottish devolution and included representatives of local government, the Scottish Churches, Trade Unions, Small Business Federation and some political parties. The task of finding a consensus among the participating groups was formidable. Nevertheless, on St Andrew’s Day 1990, the convention delivered its first report recommending a legislature elected by proportional representation financed by assigned revenues from taxes raised in Scotland.
Kenyon was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 1999 Birthday Honours.
In 2001 he stood in the Banff and Buchan by-election for the Liberal Democrats, unsuccessfully contesting the Scottish Parliamentary seat vacated by the resignation of Alex Salmond. He joined the Liberal Democrats only the year before, having stayed out of party politics as chairman of the convention. In the 2003 Scottish Parliamentary elections, he contested the Stirling constituency.
St Andrew’s Memorial Window
The window faces the main entrance door and is adorned by a sign to that effect made by Patricia White. As the name suggests, the window allows a display of flowers in memory of loved ones irrespective of whether there are flowers elsewhere in the church. Please ask Heather Swain, the Flower Rota coordinator or Richard in the event of query.
St Mary’s Third Sunday at three
The concert on 15th January entitled ‘Pistons and Pipes’ was a very good concert with virtuoso playing on the trumpet, clarinet and organ. The organ was greatly to the liking of the musicians. Despite a slightly improved number in the audience a loss was still sustained. This underlines the need for sustained support by the congregation. Details of the next concert on the 19th February appear below.

Advance Notice: Casting the Net Gathering
The Revd Nerys Jones writes:
‘Over the last few years the Gathering has been a great opportunity for church members across the diocese to exchange ideas and experiences, to learn something new together, to worship at our Cathedral and to be re-energised in ministry and mission. This year’s event on Saturday 27th May will be no exception.
John Bell, the inspirational Christian speaker, hymn-writer, and broadcaster has been invited to help us to think afresh about worship and about the way we view Jesus. There will be opportunities during the day to meet friends old and new, to find out what is going on in other churches and to explore the Cathedral.
Have fun learning new songs from all over the world, trying out a wide range of prayer activities and taking part in hands-on workshops – you may learn some new skills and perhaps discover hidden talents! The event is designed to appeal to all ages and will be a family-friendly day out. If you are interested, please look out for booking forms which will be sent to all the churches soon after Easter’.
