The Lent Group: ‘A long road to a foretaste of Heaven’
Adverse weather and other circumstances have meant that the Aberfoyle Lent Group will need to be postponed. The Callander meeting on the 21st March (see below) is unaffected.

Proposed new hymn books
Some time ago, an offer of new hymn books was received from an anonymous donor. The donor makes this offer in the belief that younger visitors or regular worshippers attending our services are far more likely to be impressed by singing at least some more modern hymns. The offer is to provide 50 copies for everyday worship, and these would replace our existing 3 hymn books.
The acceptance of this gift is a two-stage process. The first stage is consideration within the Vestry, but under Canon Law Vestry needs to demonstrate that, if it desires any change to the form or conduct of worship, it has conducted a consultation within the congregation. In other words, no change can be made without the express consent of the congregation. The culmination of this second stage will be a ballot of the congregation which will be held at the Annual Meeting of the parish scheduled for the 9th December to accept, or not, these new hymnbooks.
St Mary’s Vestry has for the past eighteen months been considering this generous offer and has carefully considered three publications. Two were rejected as not adequately reflecting the worshipping tradition of St Mary’s. The third, being the book now proposed, found some favour. It is a new edition of our present Ancient and Modern hymnbook and is exactly the same size and appearance as our present book. There are about 500 new hymns which will replace about 200 which are removed. In addition, the words of some hymns in this hymnbook have been altered to correspond with present day liturgical thinking.
To give the congregation a better idea of the ‘flavour’ of the proposed book prior to the ballot, one hymn not presently contained in our existing hymnbook will be sung from a Sampler at every service between Sunday 8th April and Sunday 30th November. Vestry members will welcome feedback from the congregation during that period.

5th Sunday of Lent
PASSIONTIDE BEGINS
Traditionally the final two weeks of Lent are used as an immediate preparation for the sorrowful events of the Easter drama. It is a time to focus on the Passion and death of Jesus and accompany him in heart and mind to Calvary.
Collect
Most merciful God,
who by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ
delivered and saved the world:
grant that by faith in him who suffered on the cross
we may triumph in the power of his victory;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen
