Linkage Outing
Details for the trip on Thursday 14th July have now been finalised: see below.
Saturday 18th June
Please try to support at least one of the three events occurring in The Linkage this Saturday
General Synod
James Gardner and myself as lay and clergy representatives respectively attended Synod in Edinburgh last week. The meeting was dominated by debate regarding the proposed amendment of Canon 31 that defines the Scottish Episcopal Church’s understanding of the meaning of marriage.
Presently the first words of subsection 1 of the Canon read
‘The Doctrine of this Church is that marriage is a physical spiritual and mystical union of one man and one woman…..’
Following a secret ballot within Synod, the passing of the first reading of the draft of the proposed amended Canon deleted such words. The second reading of this amended Canon will take place at General Synod 2017. Should the amendment pass, the effect will be to allow the marriage of a same sex couple within a church wedding service. No cleric however will be obliged to conduct such a service against their conscience.
The Scottish Episcopal Church is a part of the Anglican Communion The 38 leaders or senior Bishops of the Communion gathered at a ‘Primates Meeting’ at the beginning of the year. Those present expressed a desire to ‘walk together’ However, the Episcopal Church of the United States, having previously agreed to change its Canons to allow Same Sex Marriage, was at the meeting excluded from the decision making process of the Communion for a period of three years. Should the process of amendment of the Scottish Episcopal Canon regarding marriage be completed, it appears that our church will be obliged to accept similar exclusion.
These are extremely difficult and sensitive issues. My explanation serves merely as an outline of developments. For those interested, I will endeavor over the next weeks to point in the direction of more informed opinion as and when it appears.

Sunday 19th June 2016 – Trinity 4
O God, the protector of all who trust in you,
without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy:
increase and multiply upon us your mercy;
that with you as our ruler and guide
we may so pass through things temporal
that we lose not our hold on things eternal;
grant this, heavenly Father,
for our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
